Grilled & Oven-Baked Bacon Wrapped Asparagus

bacon wrapped asparagus grill

If you’re like me and you really love bacon, then this is the recipe for you. Anything that is wrapped in bacon is a good time my friend!

These yummy asparagus spears wrapped in bacon come with a spicy date sauce. Fair warning though it is very spicy (which I love!).

The heat develops if you put the sauce in the fridge, so reduce the amount of chili to an enjoyable amount for YOU. Food should be enjoyable, so please don’t feel restricted by the recipe.

Tips for bacon wrapped asparagus:

Can I prepare these ahead of time?
Yes! Assemble the bacon-wrapped asparagus bundles and refrigerate them for up to 24 hours before cooking. This makes them perfect for entertaining.

How do I store leftovers?
Place any leftovers in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven at 375°F (190°C) for about 10 minutes to retain crispiness.

Can I use turkey bacon?
Absolutely. Turkey bacon is a leaner alternative and works well, though it may not crisp up as much as traditional bacon.

Can I use vegan bacon?
100% you can! I would suggest getting one that has a “stretch” to it, so that it doesn’t break when wrapping the asparagus and grilling it.

What if I don't have a grill or grill pan?
No worries! I have added equipment substitutes in the recipe. But basically you will use a fry pan instead of a grill and still finish it off in the oven. You could also use an air fryer, but would still need a fry pan for the spicy date dipping sauce.

  • 12 rashers streaky bacon
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt & pepper to taste
Spicy Date Dipping Sauce
  • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 2 shallots, diced
  • 8 dates, deseeded & roughly chopped
  • 2 cups boiling water
  • 1 red chili, deseeded & diced
  • Pinch of both salt & pepper
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

Instructions

Grilled & Oven-Baked Bacon Wrapped Asparagus
  1. Preheat oven to 355 F fan bake. Line a baking sheet with baking paper.
  2. Wrap one rasher of bacon around one asparagus spear. Repeat for the rest of the asparagus spears and bacon rashers.
  3. Place a large cast iron grill pan on a high heat or use a bbq grill (can substitute with a fry pan).
  4. Add olive oil, once hot, grill bacon wrapped asparagus spears for 3 - 4 minutes, turning regularly.
  5. Transfer to your baking sheet when bacon looks slightly charred on several sides but not fully cooked.
  6. Sprinkle with garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Place in the oven for 20 - 25 minutes or until bacon is golden all over. Times may vary by oven.
Spicy Date Dipping Sauce
  1. Using the same grill pan, if you used a bbq you'll need to switch to a fry pan. Place it on a medium heat. Deglaze grill pan with balsamic vinegar.
  2. Use a heat-proof silicone or rubber spatula or spoon to scrape up some the bacon flavor.
  3. Add shallots, dates, and chili. Grill (or fry) for 2 - 3 minutes whilst turning or stirring.
  4. Add boiling water (be really careful of the splattering). Reduce heat to low-medium.
  5. Simmer for 10-15 minutes or until 3/4’s of the liquid has evaporated and the shallots are translucent. Scrape the bottom of the grill regularly. Take off the heat.
  6. Place spicy date mixture in a blender. Add salt, pepper, & apple cider vinegar. Blend up until smooth. Add more water to your desired consistency.
  7. Serve your delicious bacon-wrapped asparagus with spicy date dipping sauce!
