Tips for easy homemade blueberry donuts

What's the secret to making really moist baked blueberry donuts?

The key to super moist blueberry donuts is all about balance! I've found that using yogurt or buttermilk in the batter works wonders for keeping things tender. Don't overmix your batter - that's a recipe for tough donuts! And here's my favorite tip: don't go overboard with the blueberries. Be careful not to overbake - when they spring back slightly to the touch, they're ready to come out.

Can I substitute the blueberry glaze with a lemon one for a different flavor twist?

Absolutely! I'm all about switching things up, and a lemon glaze on blueberry donuts is divine. The bright citrus perfectly complements the sweet blueberries - it's like they were meant to be together! Simply mix powdered sugar with fresh lemon juice and a bit of zest until you reach your desired consistency. For an extra kick, add a tiny drop of lemon extract. The tangy-sweet combo creates this amazing flavor contrast that will have everyone asking for your secret. Trust me, once you try this combo, you might never go back to regular glaze!

Is there a way to make the blueberry glaze for donuts without using artificial colors?

Yes! I'm a huge fan of natural coloring, and blueberries already pack so much beautiful color on their own. To make a natural blueberry glaze, I simmer fresh or frozen blueberries with a splash of water until they burst and release their juices. Then I strain this mixture and use the intensely colored liquid to mix with powdered sugar. The result is a gorgeous purple-blue glaze without any artificial additions! For a deeper color, you can reduce the blueberry juice further before adding it to your sugar. It's stunning and delicious!

How do I prevent the blueberries from sinking to the bottom when making blueberry donuts?

This used to drive me crazy until I discovered a few tricks! First, try tossing your blueberries in a light coating of flour before folding them into the batter - this helps them "float" better. I also like to use wild blueberries when possible, as they're smaller and less likely to sink. Another genius move is to fill your donut pans halfway, sprinkle in some berries, then top with more batter. This "sandwich" method keeps them suspended beautifully.

What are some tips for creating a perfect glaze consistency for blueberry donuts?

Getting that dreamy, Instagram-worthy glaze is all about consistency! I start with sifted powdered sugar (sifting prevents those annoying lumps) and add my blueberry liquid a little at a time. The perfect glaze should coat the back of a spoon and drip off slowly - not runny like water but not thick like frosting. If it's too thick, I add a few drops more liquid; too thin, a bit more sugar. Room temperature ingredients work best! And here's my pro tip: let your donuts cool completely before glazing, then dip them upside down into the glaze for the most even coating. Let the excess drip off for about 10 seconds before flipping them right-side up!

Can baked blueberry donut holes be made in a mini muffin tin, and if so, how would the baking time change?

Mini muffin tins make perfect donut holes! I've done this tons of times when I don't have a donut hole pan. The conversion is super simple:

  1. Prepare your blueberry donut batter as usual

  2. Lightly grease your mini muffin tin (I use a non-stick spray with flour)

  3. Fill each cavity about 2/3 full

  4. Reduce the baking time by about 25-30%

So if your regular donuts bake for 20 minutes, start checking your donut holes around the 14-15 minute mark. They're done when a toothpick comes out clean or they spring back when lightly touched. Once cooled, you can roll them in your blueberry glaze for the full donut hole experience. They're adorably poppable and perfect for parties!

My Other Baked Donut Recipes

I've been on a total donut-baking spree lately! While these blueberry beauties with their gorgeous glaze are my current obsession, I've whipped up quite a few other flavors that might tempt your tastebuds.

My kitchen adventures have led me to create some pretty amazing flavor combinations. For something bright and zesty, my lemon glazed Greek yogurt donuts are an absolute dream! They're fluffy but moist with a slightly crispy outside—perfect for those mornings when you need a little sunshine on your plate.

When strawberry season hits, I go a bit crazy and bake batch after batch of my fresh strawberry donuts. The sweet berry flavor in both the donut and glaze just screams summer!

I've found that baked donuts are so much easier than fried ones—less mess, less stress, and they're ready in about 15 minutes. Plus, I don't feel quite as guilty enjoying one (or two... or three) with my morning coffee!

The best part? All these recipes use the same basic technique as my blueberry donuts. Just mix, pipe into the pan, and bake until golden. Easy peasy! Paige x
